Office for the Internal Market (OIM) has published its first internal report on the impact of Defra’s proposed ban on horticultural peat sales in England.
The report concludes that, while the ban on horticultural peat sales in England may lead to some changes in patterns of buying and selling of peat-containing compost within the UK that could have an impact on individual businesses, “these are likely to be modest in the context of the overall market”. It also notes that “shortages of peat-free inputs may result in a shortage of peat-free growing media. As a result, the OIM cautions that “a further rapid expansion [in the availability of peat-free inputs] would be needed to replace current peat use in retail growing media by the end of 2024.”
