The tide of plastic in the world and in your garden can seem overwhelming and sometimes it seems that alone we can’t make much difference. There’s a lot of confusion about all the gardening products claiming to be biodegradable, plastic-free or compostable. Sometimes it seems hard to know where to start. The tide of plastic in the world and in your garden can seem overwhelming and sometimes it seems that alone we can’t make much difference. There’s a lot of confusion about all the gardening products claiming to be biodegradable, plastic-free or compostable. Sometimes it seems hard to know where to start.

Whether it’s inspiration to get going that you need or practical help to approach plastic-free gardening one step at a time, this presentation (and ‘Plastic-free Gardening’, the book*) will make the process less daunting and easier to tackle.

• Clear information about garden plastics and their effects on the environment

• Help to weigh up alternative materials and marketing claims

• Low-cost, fun and DIY ideas for adapting your garden and the way you garden to use less plastic

Fiona Thackeray is Head of Operations of Trellis, the therapeutic gardening charity. She has pursued her interest in the natural environment through conservation work with sea-turtles in Greece and later rainforest ecosystems in Brazil. She has worked in therapeutic gardening for 24 years, with people with learning disabilities in Bristol and visually impaired students in Brazil (with whom she built Brazil’s 4th sensory garden) before returning to Perthshire to support therapeutic gardening projects all over Scotland. In addition to ‘Plastic-free Gardening’, Fiona has written award-winning fiction and is working on her second novel.

*While most book covers contain plastic, this one is plastic-free.
